Day Out in Karachi with a Baby: What to Pack for Clifton and Sea View

An evening at Clifton Beach or Sea View is a Karachi tradition, and many families take their babies along from the first months. With heat, sand, crowds and limited facilities, a little planning makes the trip much easier. Here is what to pack and how to keep your baby fed and comfortable.

Pick the right time

  • Go in the late afternoon or evening. Midday sun in Karachi is strong for most of the year, and babies overheat quickly.
  • Weekdays are calmer than weekend evenings, when the beach gets very crowded.
  • Check the weather. Strong winds and rough sea are common in the monsoon months, when sea access is often restricted.

What to pack: the food bag

  • Water in a clean bottle or open cup, for babies over 6 months
  • Breast milk or formula, plus a clean bottle if you use one
  • A ready porridge mix and a small flask of hot water, if your baby will be hungry while you are out
  • Soft fruit that travels well, such as banana
  • Snacks for toddlers: soft roasted makhana pieces, soft fruit, or homemade porridge bites
  • Bowl, spoon, bib and a small bag for used items

Cooked food spoils fast in the heat. Avoid carrying cooked rice, daal or meat for more than an hour or two without a cool box.

What to pack: everything else

  • Hat and light, loose cotton clothes that cover arms and legs
  • A light shawl or towel for shade and for sitting on
  • Wipes, hand sanitiser and extra nappies
  • A change of clothes, because sand and sea spray get everywhere
  • A carrier or sling, since strollers struggle on sand

For babies under 6 months, shade and clothing are the main sun protection. Ask your doctor before using sunscreen on a young baby.

Beach food stalls and your baby

Corn, chaat, gol gappay and fried snacks are part of the fun for adults, but they are not suitable for babies. They are often salty or spicy, and street water and ice can carry germs that cause diarrhoea. Toddlers can share plain, freshly cooked items in small amounts, but keep their main meal from home.

Keeping your baby cool and hydrated

  • Offer feeds more often in warm weather.
  • Give small sips of water to babies over 6 months.
  • Watch for signs of overheating: flushed skin, fussiness, fewer wet nappies or unusual sleepiness. Move to shade, loosen clothing and feed. If your baby seems very unwell, seek medical help.

Hygiene tips

  • Clean hands before every feed. Sand and sea water make this harder, so keep sanitiser handy.
  • Keep feeding items in a closed bag, away from sand.
  • Do not let babies drink sea water or play with their hands in their mouth after touching wet sand.

A simple feeding plan for a 2-hour visit

  • Before leaving: a full feed or meal at home
  • At the beach: milk feed or water, plus banana or a ready porridge if needed
  • On the drive back: a light snack for toddlers, then dinner at home
