Food Groups for Toddlers: A Simple Guide

Talking about food groups for toddlers sounds technical, but it is really just a way of making sure your child gets a bit of everything over the day. A Pakistani home kitchen already has all of them: roti, daal, dahi, sabzi, fruit and a little ghee. Here is how to use them without counting calories.

The five main groups, desi style

1. Grains and starches

Roti, chawal, daliya, oats, sooji, potato and sweet potato. These give energy. Whole grains such as whole wheat atta, barley (jau) and brown rice add fibre. Offer some at most meals.

2. Protein foods

Egg, chicken, mutton, beef, fish, daal, chana (mashed, not whole), lobia and rajma. WHO advises animal-source foods daily where possible, alongside pulses. These build muscle and give iron and zinc.

3. Dairy

Dahi, milk, paneer, cheese and lassi without sugar. After 12 months, full-fat cow's or buffalo milk can be a drink; around 350–500 ml a day of milk and dairy is enough, as too much can push out iron-rich food.

4. Vegetables

Lauki, tori, carrot, spinach (palak), peas, pumpkin, tomato and cauliflower. Cook them soft and mix them into daal, khichdi and salan if your child picks them out.

5. Fruit

Banana, apple, guava, mango, orange, papaya and seasonal fruit. Whole fruit is better than juice. Cut round fruits like grapes lengthwise into quarters.

Healthy fats such as ghee, butter, oil and finely ground nuts sit alongside these groups. Toddlers need fat for energy and brain growth, so a teaspoon of ghee or oil in their food is normal.

How much is a toddler portion?

Toddler portions are small. A useful rule is roughly a quarter to half of an adult portion, adjusted to appetite. Examples for a 1–3 year old:

  • Half to one small roti, or 2–4 tablespoons of rice.
  • 1 egg, or 2–3 tablespoons of minced chicken or daal.
  • Half a cup of dahi.
  • 2–4 tablespoons of cooked vegetables.
  • Half a banana or a few slices of apple.

Let your child decide how much to eat from what you offer. Appetite goes up and down from day to day, and that is normal.

A simple daily checklist

Rather than measuring every meal, check at the end of the day:

  1. Did my child have a grain or starch at most meals?
  2. Was there at least one protein food, ideally an animal source?
  3. Was there some dairy?
  4. Were there at least two different fruits or vegetables?
  5. Did they drink water, not sugary drinks or juice?

If most answers are yes most days, your child is doing well. Over a week, aim to rotate foods so you are not serving the same daal every day.

Building a meal from the groups

  • Breakfast: egg plus half a roti plus a few banana slices.
  • Lunch: khichdi with mashed lauki and a spoon of dahi.
  • Snack: fruit or a small bowl of porridge.
  • Dinner: chicken salan (toddler portion taken out before spices) with rice and soft carrots.

For busy days, a cereal can fill the grain slot quickly. Our pack of 3, any flavours lets you mix options; some flavours contain nuts or gluten (barley, semolina), so check the label for allergies.

Frequently asked questions

Does my toddler need vitamin supplements if they eat all food groups?

Many children who eat a varied diet do not, but some need vitamin D or iron. Ask your paediatrician rather than starting supplements on your own.

What if my toddler refuses a whole food group?

Keep offering it in small amounts and different forms. Vegetables can be hidden in daal or paratha, and protein can come from eggs if meat is refused.

Are sweets and fried snacks a food group?

No. They are occasional extras. Avoid added sugar and salt under 12 months, and keep them small after that.
