Makhana, also called fox nuts or lotus seeds, is a popular snack across Pakistan and India. Roasted makhana is light, crunchy and easy to buy, so many parents wonder if it is safe for their baby. Here is when to start, how to serve it at each age, and what to watch out for.

What is makhana?

Makhana is the seed of a water plant called Euryale ferox. The seeds are dried and popped, which gives the light, puffy pieces sold in shops. Plain makhana is naturally low in fat and contains some plant protein, calcium and magnesium.

When can babies have makhana?

Babies can start makhana once they begin solids at around 6 months, but the form matters:

  • 6 to 9 months: only as a fine powder cooked into porridge or kheer. Never whole pieces.
  • 9 to 12 months: still best ground or cooked soft in porridge. Some parents offer very small crushed pieces that soften in milk, always under supervision.
  • 12 months and up: soft roasted pieces as a snack, broken into smaller bits, with your toddler sitting down.

Whole roasted makhana is crunchy and does not dissolve fully, so it can be a choking risk for young babies.

What makhana offers

  • Light and easy to digest when cooked soft
  • Calcium for growing bones
  • Low in fat when roasted without much oil
  • A filling snack for toddlers that is far better than packaged chips

Is makhana an allergen?

Makhana allergy is uncommon, but any new food can cause a reaction. Offer a small amount first and wait 2 to 3 days before adding another new food. Watch for rash, vomiting or swelling.

How to make makhana powder at home

  1. Dry-roast plain makhana on low heat for 5 to 7 minutes until crisp. Do not add salt, sugar or spices.
  2. Let it cool completely.
  3. Grind into a fine powder and sieve out any large bits.
  4. Store in a clean, airtight jar and use within 2 to 3 weeks.

3 ways to serve makhana

1. Makhana porridge (6 months and up)

Cook 1 tablespoon makhana powder in 120 ml water or milk for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring until smooth. Add mashed banana or a little date paste for sweetness after 7 months.

2. Makhana and rice porridge (7 months and up)

Mix makhana powder with rice flour in equal parts and cook into a smooth porridge. A gentle way to add variety to plain rice.

3. Roasted makhana snack (12 months and up)

Dry-roast makhana with a few drops of ghee and a pinch of turmeric or cumin. Break larger pieces in half, cool, and serve with your toddler seated.

What to avoid

  • Shop-bought flavoured makhana with salt, masala, cheese or caramel coating
  • Whole pieces for babies under 1 year
  • Offering snacks while your child is walking, running or in a moving car

A ready option with makhana

Nutri Bowl Travel Mix Puffed Rice & Makhana blends makhana with puffed rice and mixed nuts into a porridge mix that is ready in five minutes with hot milk or water, with no preservatives. Because it contains nuts, offer it once your baby has tried nuts on their own without a reaction.
