If you are a working mother, baby food can feel like one more full-time job squeezed into the hour before you leave the house. A working mother's baby food plan does not have to be perfect or fancy; it has to be safe, nourishing and doable on a weekday morning. Here is a simple 10-minute routine that many Pakistani families can adapt, whether the baby stays with a nani, dadi, a helper or a daycare.

The weekend prep (about 1 hour)

A little work on Saturday or Sunday makes weekday mornings much calmer.

  • Cook two bases: a pot of soft khichdi (rice and moong daal) and a vegetable mash such as gajar, kaddu or aloo with a little ghee.
  • Prepare a protein: boiled and shredded chicken, or minced meat cooked soft without salt for babies under 12 months.
  • Portion and chill fast: spoon into small clean boxes, cool quickly and refrigerate. Use cooked baby food within 24 to 48 hours from the fridge, or freeze portions and use within about a month.
  • Label: write the date with a marker on tape. It helps caregivers too.

The 10-minute weekday morning

  1. Minute 0 to 2: put water on to boil and take the day's portions out of the fridge.
  2. Minute 2 to 5: make the breakfast porridge. Stir boiled water or breastmilk into a porridge mix, or warm a portion of soft suji or daliya.
  3. Minute 5 to 7: boil an egg (for babies already eating egg) or warm the khichdi portion until steaming, then let it cool.
  4. Minute 7 to 9: pack lunch for the caregiver: khichdi box, a soft fruit like banana or a ripe pear, and the spoon and bib.
  5. Minute 9 to 10: fill a clean bottle with boiled cooled water and leave a short note for the day.

Reheat only once, and throw away leftovers the baby has eaten from. In summer heat and during load-shedding, food spoils faster, so keep boxes in the fridge until the last moment.

Keeping breastfeeding going

WHO advises continuing breastfeeding to 2 years or beyond, and many working mothers manage it with a mix of morning and evening feeds plus expressed milk. Feed just before leaving and as soon as you return. Expressed breastmilk keeps for about 4 hours at room temperature and up to 4 days in a clean fridge. Ask your workplace about a private space and break time for expressing.

Notes for nani, dadi or the helper

Caregivers love the baby, but older habits can creep in. A kind, clear list on the fridge helps:

  • No sugar, salt, honey, tea or biscuits before 12 months.
  • No whole nuts, whole grapes, chana or popcorn for young children.
  • Always seat the baby upright while eating, and never leave them alone with food.
  • Offer water with meals and note how many wet nappies.
  • Call me if there is fever, vomiting, a rash after a new food, or much less feeding.

When you need a back-up

On days when nothing is prepped, a stock of Nutri Bowl Pack of 4 bundle lets you choose any four flavours and make a warm porridge in minutes. Check each pack for allergens: some flavours contain nuts or gluten grains like barley and semolina.

Frequently asked questions

Can I freeze khichdi for my baby?

Yes. Cool it quickly, freeze in small portions and thaw in the fridge overnight. Reheat until steaming, stir, and cool before serving.

How many meals should the caregiver give?

From 6 to 8 months, 2 to 3 small meals; from 9 to 11 months, 3 meals and 1 to 2 snacks, plus breastmilk. Share this with whoever looks after your baby.

Is it okay to use ready porridge every day?

It can be one meal of the day. Try to keep other meals varied with daal, vegetables, fruit and animal foods like egg or chicken.
