6 Month Baby Food Chart for Pakistani Parents
Your baby is turning six months old, and suddenly everyone has advice. Your mother says start with daal ka pani, your friend swears by Cerelac, and the internet shows charts full of foods you cannot find in your local market.
This guide keeps it simple. It explains what the World Health Organization recommends, which desi foods make good first foods, and gives a four-week 6 month baby food chart you can follow in a Pakistani kitchen.
Is my baby ready for solid food?
WHO recommends starting complementary foods at 6 months, while continuing breastfeeding up to 2 years or beyond. Before the first meal, look for these signs:
- Your baby can sit up with support and hold their head steady.
- They show interest in food, watching you eat or reaching for your plate.
- They no longer push food straight out of their mouth with their tongue.
If your baby was born early or has a medical condition, ask your paediatrician when to start.
How much should a 6 month old eat?
At six months, breast milk or formula is still the main food. Solid food is for learning tastes and textures, not for filling up.
- Meals: start with 1 meal a day, building to 2 meals a day over the first month.
- Amount: begin with 2 to 3 teaspoons, and slowly increase to a few tablespoons.
- Texture: smooth and runny at first, then a little thicker.
- Water: small sips from an open cup with meals.
Let your baby lead. When they turn away, close their mouth or push the spoon, the meal is over. Forcing food often leads to fussy eating later.
Good desi first foods
- Grains: rice porridge, suji (semolina) porridge, daliya, barley
- Vegetables: kaddu (pumpkin), carrot, aloo (potato), lauki (bottle gourd), sweet potato
- Fruits: mashed banana, stewed apple, stewed pear, mashed papaya
- Protein and iron: mashed moong daal, well-cooked egg, soft chicken purée
A note on daal ka pani: the water from boiled daal is a traditional first food, but most of the protein and iron stays in the lentils. Mash the cooked daal itself into a smooth paste instead.
From six months your baby's iron stores start running low, so WHO advises including animal-source foods such as egg, chicken or fish daily where possible.
Foods to avoid in the first year
- Honey: not before 12 months, because of the risk of infant botulism.
- Added sugar and salt: no sugar in porridge and no salt in khichdi. Babies' kidneys cannot handle much salt.
- Whole nuts and hard pieces: a choking risk. Nuts should be finely ground only.
- Sweet drinks and juices: including tea, which also reduces iron absorption.
4-week 6 month baby food chart
Introduce one new food at a time and wait 2 to 3 days before the next, so you can spot any reaction. Breast milk or formula continues on demand throughout.
| Week | Meals a day | What to offer |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | 1 (late morning) | Day 1–3: smooth rice porridge. Day 4–7: pumpkin purée. |
| Week 2 | 1 | Day 8–10: mashed banana. Day 11–14: carrot purée. Rotate earlier foods on other days. |
| Week 3 | 2 (late morning and afternoon) | Day 15–17: mashed moong daal. Day 18–21: suji porridge (no sugar). |
| Week 4 | 2 | Day 22–24: well-cooked mashed egg. Day 25–28: stewed apple. Mix tried foods, such as rice porridge with pumpkin. |
If you see a rash, vomiting, swelling or breathing trouble after a new food, stop it and contact your doctor straight away. Swelling of the face or difficulty breathing needs emergency care.
Sample day at 6 and a half months
- Early morning: breastfeed or formula
- Late morning: 2–3 tablespoons rice porridge mixed with pumpkin purée
- Afternoon: breastfeed or formula
- Late afternoon: 2 tablespoons mashed moong daal
- Evening and night: breastfeed or formula as usual
When you are short on time
Cooking a fresh porridge twice a day is hard when you are also managing a home, a job or older children. A ready porridge can help on busy days, as long as you check the label for added sugar, salt and preservatives.
Nutri Bowl Rice Porridge With Nuts is made from rice and mixed nuts with no preservatives, and is ready in five minutes with hot milk or water. Because it contains nuts, offer it once your baby has had plain rice porridge and has tried nuts on their own without any reaction. Prepare it a little thinner than the pack suggests for a younger baby.
Common questions
My baby only eats a spoonful. Is that normal?
Yes. In the first weeks many babies eat only a few spoonfuls. Milk still provides most of their nutrition. Keep offering and stay relaxed.
Can I give cow's milk at 6 months?
Advice differs between health bodies, so ask your paediatrician which milk suits your baby if you are not breastfeeding.
Should I give Cerelac or homemade food?
Both can fit into a healthy diet. Homemade food lets you control every ingredient. If you use a packaged cereal, choose one without added sugar and offer plenty of fresh foods alongside it.
This article is general information, not medical advice. Check with your paediatrician before starting solids, especially if your baby was premature or has allergies or a medical condition.
