Nutri Bowl savoury rice porridge pack for babies

By eight months most babies have moved past the first-taste stage and are ready for proper little meals. This 8 month baby food chart is built around foods already cooking in a Pakistani kitchen, so you can feed your baby from the family pot with small changes: no added salt, no sugar, and softer textures.

What changes at 8 months

At this age many babies can sit well, open their mouth for the spoon and start moving food around with their tongue. Some begin to pick up small soft pieces between finger and thumb. Breastmilk (or formula) is still the main drink, and food is there to add nutrients like iron and zinc.

  • Meals: 2 to 3 small meals a day, plus 1 to 2 snacks if your baby is interested.
  • Amount: roughly 3 to 5 tablespoons per meal, slowly working towards half a small katori (bowl). Follow your baby's hunger cues rather than a fixed number.
  • Texture: mashed with soft lumps, not runny puree. Think well-cooked khichdi mashed with a fork.
  • Animal foods: offer egg, chicken, fish or meat every day where possible, cooked soft and finely mashed or shredded.

Sample 8 month baby food chart (one day)

  1. Early morning: breastfeed or formula.
  2. Breakfast (8 to 9 am): soft rice porridge or sooji kheer made without sugar, with a little mashed banana for natural sweetness.
  3. Mid-morning: breastfeed, then a few soft pieces of ripe papaya or steamed apple.
  4. Lunch (12 to 1 pm): moong daal khichdi with a teaspoon of desi ghee and mashed lauki (bottle gourd) or carrot.
  5. Afternoon: breastfeed or formula; a little plain dahi (yoghurt) if your baby enjoys it.
  6. Dinner (6 to 7 pm): mashed boiled egg yolk and white, or shredded chicken from the family salan before spices are added, with soft roti soaked in the shorba.
  7. Bedtime: breastfeed or formula.

Rotate foods through the week. One day aloo and egg, another day daal and pumpkin (kaddu), another chicken and spinach (palak). Variety is what builds a good eater over time.

Three simple recipes for this age

Moong daal khichdi

Wash 1 tablespoon rice and 1 tablespoon yellow moong daal. Cook with 1 cup water and a small piece of carrot until very soft, around 20 minutes. Add a pinch of haldi (turmeric) and a few drops of ghee, then mash to a lumpy texture. No salt needed.

Egg and potato mash

Boil an egg hard (fully cooked, no runny yolk) and a small potato. Mash both together with a spoon of breastmilk, formula or the cooking water until soft and moist. Egg is a common allergen, so offer it in the morning and watch for rash, swelling or vomiting.

Chicken shorba with soft rice

Before adding salt and chilli to the family salan, take out a piece of boneless chicken and some of the plain broth. Shred the chicken very finely and mix with soft cooked rice. This is an easy way to give daily animal-source food without cooking twice.

Tips for busy Pakistani homes

  • Load-shedding: cook fresh in small quantities. Cooked baby food should not sit at room temperature for more than about an hour, especially in summer heat.
  • Joint families: elders may offer chai, biscuits or a taste of sweet mithai. Kindly explain that babies under one should not have tea, added sugar or salt.
  • Choking safety: no whole nuts, whole chana or hard raw pieces. Grind nuts into a fine powder if you use them.
  • Water: offer a few sips of boiled and cooled water in an open cup with meals.

On days when you are short of time, a ready porridge can fill a gap. Our Savoury Rice Porridge is a simple rice-based option you can mix to the thickness your baby likes and serve alongside mashed vegetables or egg.

Frequently asked questions

How many times a day should an 8 month old eat?

Most 8 month olds do well with 2 to 3 meals and 1 to 2 small snacks, alongside regular breastfeeds or formula feeds.

Can I give my 8 month old roti?

Yes, soft roti soaked in daal or shorba is fine for most babies. Wheat contains gluten, so introduce it on its own first and watch for any reaction.

My baby gags on lumps. Should I go back to smooth puree?

Gagging is a normal part of learning. Make lumps smaller and softer rather than going back to fully smooth food, and always stay with your baby while they eat.
