Ghee for Babies: How Much Is Right?

In most Pakistani homes, someone will tell you to add ghee for babies to "make them strong." There is some truth in it: babies need fat for energy and brain growth, and a little desi ghee (clarified butter) is an easy way to add it. But more is not always better. Here is a sensible guide to how much is right.

Why babies need fat

From around 6 months, when you start complementary foods, a baby's stomach is tiny and needs energy-dense food. Fat gives more energy per spoon than carbohydrates or protein, and helps the body absorb vitamins A, D, E and K. Breast milk is naturally rich in fat, which is one reason WHO advises continuing breastfeeding to 2 years or beyond.

Ghee is one useful fat among several. Oil, butter, full-fat dahi, egg yolk, and finely ground nuts all add healthy fats too.

How much ghee by age

These are rough, practical amounts, not strict rules:

  • 6–8 months: a few drops to about a quarter teaspoon, stirred into one or two meals a day, such as khichdi or mashed vegetables.
  • 8–12 months: around half a teaspoon per meal, in two or three meals.
  • 1–3 years: about half to one teaspoon per meal, depending on appetite and the rest of the diet.

If your baby is growing well and eating a range of foods, there is no need to add extra spoons "for weight." If your paediatrician is concerned about slow weight gain, they may suggest more energy-dense foods, and ghee can be part of that plan.

Easy ways to use ghee

  1. Daal and khichdi: add a little ghee at the end of cooking, after you have taken out the baby's portion and before adding salt.
  2. Porridge: stir a few drops into warm sooji, daliya or rice porridge.
  3. Mashed vegetables: pumpkin, carrot or potato mashed with ghee is soft and tasty.
  4. Roti for toddlers: a thin layer on a soft roti is fine; a heavily layered paratha is a lot of fat for a small child.

A good habit is to measure with a real teaspoon for a week or two, so you get a feel for how much you are actually adding. Many families are surprised at how quickly a "little" ghee adds up when it goes into the daal, the roti and the rice at the same meal.

Do not give spoonfuls of plain ghee, and do not use ghee to fry foods until crisp for babies, as hard fried pieces are a choking risk.

When too much ghee is a problem

  • It fills the stomach. A baby who has lots of ghee may eat less daal, egg or vegetables, missing iron and other nutrients.
  • Loose stools or tummy upset can happen with large amounts.
  • Habits: very rich food early can make plain foods less appealing later.

Homemade vs shop ghee

Homemade desi ghee and good-quality packaged ghee are both fine. Avoid vanaspati (banaspati ghee) and hydrogenated cooking fats, which can contain trans fats. Store ghee in a clean, dry jar and use a dry spoon so it does not spoil, especially in humid monsoon weather. If your baby has a cow's milk protein allergy, ask your doctor before using ghee.

Porridges with grains and dates are another way to add energy. Our Talbina with dates and nuts is barley-based (contains gluten) and includes nuts, so introduce it carefully if allergies run in the family.

Frequently asked questions

Can I give my 6-month-old ghee?

Yes, a few drops mixed into food is fine once your baby has started solids at around 6 months.

Will ghee make my baby gain weight?

It adds energy, but weight gain depends on the whole diet and health. If you are worried about weight, see your paediatrician rather than adding large amounts.

Is ghee better than oil?

Neither is magic. Using a mix of ghee and vegetable oils across the week gives variety in fats.
